Strange search issue

My users have been reporting search issues for a while. One particular issue noted is when searching from the advanced search, putting in multiple words will not always show results in the forum by "any of these words" if the words aren't in the exact order. I can live with that, its relatively rare for someone to search in a way that would cause that issue.
More strange, is it will omit some items but not others. For example, I have multiple posts in the forum with the word "workstation" in it. What I've found though is that some posts don't show up in results. The primary example I found is where in the post, the word workstation is at the end of a sentence and is actually "workstation." instead. I thought this may be the issue, because if I search with "workstation." then it shows up in results. However, I tried searching "worksta" and it brings up all the results it would if I type "workstation", but not "workstation."
Any ideas on what could be going happening here? We're using the forum as a sort of knowledgebase and its creating some frustration among staff and management (not to mention our customers that have to wait while staff searches for the information).
