You're looking for header.thtml and footer.thtml in your theme directory: /path/to/geeklog/public_html/layout/professional/ (or whatever your default theme is).

I use dreamweaver as an editor, .thtml is not a valid extension for dreamweaver. if i change the thtml to html, will it effect things negatively? will it work, or better yet, what is the best way to edit a thtml? i have never ran into this issue.

Make sure it doesn't think it's HTML. The template files often contain partial HTML (e.g. a table is opened in one file and closed in another). If your editor tries to be clever and adds the "missing" pieces, it will break your theme.
My recommendation would be to use a "plain" text editor. Same goes when editing PHP files, as explained in this FAQ article, which also has a few recommendations.
