php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed

A GL 1.6.1 install has problems with reading an RSS feed. The error log says this:
Sat 19 Jun 2010 23:09:50 BST - Unable to aquire feed reader for http://www.example.com/backend/example.xml
Sat 19 Jun 2010 23:09:50 BST - HTTP Fetch Failed 0 php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Temporary failure in name resolution
I suppose the hoster changed the linux server slightly. Any I day what could be wrong, where to look?

make sure http://www.example.com/backend/example.xml actually exists

The file existed but probably the domain was in some sort of transfer from one IP to another. All times are EST. The time is now 10:28 am.
