Is it mandatory to retain a linkback such as "powered by geeklog" on my website?

Nope, you can remove it or change it however you want.

Keeping the link on your site does help the Geeklog community though by promoting the Geeklog CMS.

You can change the template file for the footer. Look for the footer.thtml file in

Your Geeklog site\public_html\layout\Your theme name
