Topic functions for Upgrading 1.4 Geeklog

I'm upgrading some website from version 1.4 to 2.2.
The site has some custom functions that are using a core function COM_showTopics_EXT() that was used in version1.4.
I want to replace the COM_showTopics_EXT() with other functions if possible. Otherwise, I just keep using the old core function after the upgrade.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I am away for the next week so I can't really look at code at the moment but without more information it will be hard to guide you. Plus Geeklog 1.4 is really old... I know the function COM_showTopics but COM_showTopics_EXT sound like a custom function (if I am remembering correctly)
