How to incorp. PHPLinks?

Hello All, Although I find Geeklog wonderful, the weblinks feature is very primitive and basic. I would be most glad if phplinks is ported to GL as a addon. Otherwise, Please let me know how I can incorporate phplinks (or anyother links management prog) into my geeklog website. Also, I would be delighted if some of the following were to be build as modules for geeklog 1. A Banner Exchange or Banner Administration 2. A News Grabbing Script would be the first among other CMS, if GL can implement it. 3. A Navigation bar saying: 'You are Here: <section name>' so that visitors can find their way around easily. Thank you. and yeah.. My appreciation for you guys work is beyond words!!!

As we speak there is someone building a new link engine as a plugin into geeklog. As for news grabbing what do you mean exactly? We are doing RSS/RDF imports already. Is that what you are after or something more? The banner management thing is a good idea. Not sure if I personally will develop one but a good one (if you are patient enough to get it working) is OASIS (search freshmeat). HTH, --Tony

Thats wonderful. May I suggest that a section on 'work-in-progress' or something similiar be added for visitors to comprehend immediately what is going behind the scenes? The Idea is that the 'Nukes' seem to be more popular and their users must be able to see what they are missing (or going to miss) when they visit the GL site. I first came to GL to build a small portal for Medical Informatics. I have seen many sites having a automated news portion with some perl programs that 'fetch' news headlines from news sites and display on a preformatted page. I would be thrilled to see a feature like that on GL. I hope you can understand the success if I can also grab some headlines from different medical journals and publish them on a single page on my site. Thank you for the tip.. I heading to try OASIS. It seems great, but I am with minimum programming skills.

well....you can already do this in Geeklog though you can't format a page persay. If you download geeklog and go into the blocks admin section you can create a portal block. Portal blocks take as an argument a RDF/RSS url (e.g. http://www.iowaoutdoors.org/backend/iowaoutdoors.rdf) Once you save that, it will pull the headlines from the specified URL and put them in that block. Is that what you are talking about?

I made a minor change to 1.5rc2 ? links module, example: http://www.trendvue.com/links.php I added a table of contents at the top, and in page links back to _top at each header. Code follows - it shouldn't be hard to add to the current or next release and, I think, makes it easier to navigate a big links section. Mike $result = dbquery("SELECT category, count(category) as total from links group by category ORDER BY category asc"Wink; $nrows = mysql_num_rows($result); if ($nrows != 0) { $tmp .= "Our Bookmarks<br><p>The following links are to sites that we have found to be personally useful. Click on any category title to jump to that section of the list, or just scroll through the whole list.</p>"; $colmax = 3; $rowmax = abs(ceil($nrows/$colmax)); $tmp .= "n"; for ($i = 0; $i "; for ($j = 0; $j · <a href="#{$A["category"]}">{$A["category"]}</a> ({$A["total"]})"; } $tmp .= ""; } $tmp .= "n<br><hr>"; }

That is in case the website (iowaoutdoors.com) has a backend RDF/RSS feed. What I am trying to find for GL is something similiar to News Clipper (http://newsclipper.sourceforge.net/). This program retrieves headlines from a ordinary html page (no Rdf/Rss), and displays it on a website. Smile Thank you for you kind attention.

WORK IN PROGRESS - GREAT GL IDEA. I'm learning almost as fast as things are changing, and Weblogs, Portals, CMSs, ecommerce platforms, even practically some BBS's are kinda converging. But it seems like there's a recent building Web OSS pattern: - The Nukes are the worst of it - everything just kind of tied together with string, no real integration. - Some established apps that have or are acquiring...flaws: getting bloated, always badly written, etc, but things that a non-semi-sharp programmer could tell, or measure in a practical way. - Some BigName portal stuff, established and slick new, that sound great, but may be cloning the shareware lite/free vs. pro/$$$ set-up (which was always upfront) on the dl, by cu$$$tom developing good stuff for clients that doesn't hit the core OS code - while making it seem like the OS dev is moving along. Geeklog seems...sensible, in coding it's own stuff. Plugins, API expansion, whatever. That seems to be the idea, I think, from reading. Kinda obvious, and it can't be much harder if you're putting in the hours anyway, so why not do things right...but what else is new!?! Uh,... Oh, the IN PROGRESS isn't new, but maybe explaining with it the INTEGRATION part will have a bigger impact than might be expected. eTC...
